Daniel Johnston has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Northern Arizona University and graduated with the Dean's Award from the University of Texas at Austin with an M.B.A. (Finance).
He started his career in 1977 as an open-hole logging engineer for Gearhart Industries in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1981 he went to work for Gaffney, Cline and Associates, an international petroleum consulting firm. In 1984 he was hired as an evaluations engineer with Santa Fe Minerals for the Special Projects Group. He founded his private independent consulting practice in 1985.
He has published a numerous articlesand lectures on the subjects of Economics and Risk Analysis, Petroleum Fiscal Systems, and Financial Analysis.
He is also author or co-author of numerous books published by PennWell Books and the University of Dundee, Scotland.
He was guest editor for the Institute of Petroleum Accounting-University of North Texas for the special international issue (Summer 1994) of the Petroleum Accounting and Financial Management Journal (PAFMJ). He is now a column editor for the PAFMJ, and a collection of his columns and articles for PAFMJ over the years (International Exploration Economics, Risk, and Contract Analysis) was published by PennWell Books in 2003.
He was a member of the editorial advisory board of PetroMin magazine in Singapore (from 1990 to 1998), and was an editorial board member of Oil & Gas Law and Taxation Review magazine in Oxford, England. He is also a charter member of the editorial board of Global Energy Outlook, published by Gordon Moody, World Energy Group, Inc.
Daniel is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Dundee, Scotland where he teaches industry public courses and graduate seminars each May. His first work for the University of Dundee was in 1994.
He is the Vice Chair of the Executive Cmmittee of the Journal of World Energy Law and Business, published by the Association of International Petroleum Engineers and the Oxford University Press.
He is a member of the Advisory Council of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Arizona University.
Daniel has also worked on and/or provided expert testimony on economic, financial and accounting matters and industry standards and practices in disputes in Algeria, Australia, California, Texas, India, Indonesia, Equatorial Guinea, East Timor, Vietnam, China, Gabon, the Czech Republic, Myanmar, New Zealand, Russia, Turkmenistan, Peru, Venezuela, Jordan, and Yemen.
David Johnston is an engineer from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York and an engineering and petroleum industry consultant who has worked and lectured internationally on the subjects of energy and technology.
He has worked with his brother Daniel for over 15 years, and began working full time in 2001.
He is a director with Daniel Johnston & Co. Inc. and works with oil companies and governments on upstream exploration, development, enhanced oil recovery, design and analysis of petroleum fiscal systems, and marginal field development contracts worldwide. His work includes contract design, economic/financial analysis, negotiations, and expert witness work.
He is also on the Board of Directors of Ahead Energy, an NGO assosiated with the University of Rochester in New York that works to develop small scale gas projects and alternative energy applications in Mozambique.
David teaches courses in "Economic Modeling and Risk Analysis" and "International Petroleum Fiscal System Analysis and Design" at the University of Dundee, and has published two books through the University: "Economic Modeling and Risk Analysis Handbook" and "Maximum Efficient Production Rate". He has also published "Introduction to Oil Company Financial Analysis" (2006), a best seller with PennWell Books, and has written a number of articles on the subjects of energy and technology.
